977 loader question

Barry, you are most likely flooding the torque converter housing. Does there appear to be oil leaking out of the starter?
First you must determine if the scavenge pump is working. Drain converter housing and take off pump to inspect it. And also check and clean screen in 5 bolt housing at bottom where drain plug is.
It will most likely be alright but it is only meant to handle around 2 GPM of normal converter leakage.
Then if all is okay sofar determin the amount of oil the converter is leaking. I place an empty 5 gal pail in a larger bucket under the drain plug and start machine and stall conveter for one minute.(full throttle in 3rd gear holding the brakes)
You should only get a half pail but I think you will see a flood of oil coming out. If so first remove the trans pump from the front of converter housing and look for dammaged or missing seals on mounting face. (3 yellow rings) Also look in the two holes in pump for dammage inside the pump or a missing shaft bushing. If al is good this far the converter inlet relief valve in the large valve body mounted to converter could be stuck open but not very likely. If you find none of the above problems then you willl need to pull converter and inspect for problem. Coming apart, cracked housing or leaking seal ring.

Bob, actually the machine belongs to a friend of mine, he bought it last year and hasn't got to use it yet. We just got it running the other day, so it had to have this problem when he bought it. When I get back to it in a few days, I will check it closer and let you know what I find.

Barry, you guys have a Project on your hands. Since it's a newly purchaced machine, there is a good chance it was apart and put back together just to move well enough to load it.
In that case start by looking at anything that has been apart recently. Make sure the cooler lines are installed and not blocked.
Be careful it could turn into a money pit fast.

Bob, to do the bucket under the drain plug test, do I need to do this while the scavenge pump is off the machine, or do I put it back on first? I'm a little confused.................................

Hey Bob I checked everthing you mentioned, scavenge pump is working, transmission pump looks good, cooler lines look like they haven't been messed with. The only thing I haven't checked is the inlet relief valve. I started it with the drain plug out, and it filled a five gallon bucket in about twenty seconds without even stalling the converter. Tomorrow I'm going to check the inlet relief valve, and if it looks ok then I guess I'll pull the torque converter................if you have any other suggestions I appreciate it.
