So my motor threw a rod. It appears to have came loose from piston end and has a side cover loose behind the injection pump.

It's naturally aspirated, several things I don't like about the design of the engine itself.

How impo$$ible would it be to swap a more modern engine into this machine, such as a 12 valve 5.9?

Not really picky on the motor, just something with a turbo that runs, not sure how completely impractical it would be to attempt, or if it's not a bad solution to replaced the naturally aspirated worn out and blown engine.

I don't seem to be seeing any of the D318 orginal motors laying around all over the place, have been trying to sell the machine, doesn't seem to be a very hot commodity with the blown engine. I've been getting offers based on tonage and current scrap price.

Maybe it's time for the scrap yard and part out the old girl, if an engine swap to a more modern engine is out it may be over for it.

Anyone out there attempted this?

3306?

Biggest problem with the common modern engines will be usable torque at the rpm the machine is geared for.

You need to find a machine with bad tracks, transmission etc. it would be the equivalent of buying an engine by the time you scrap the part you don’t need.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Out here on the left coast where there were more Cats used in ag,running D6's are getting hard to sell. There have been several on local craigslist that slowly kept getting cheaper for a year, finally at $4000 or so the one went away from being listed.

Last D6 I drug home with bad engine was free. The last owner did not fix a leak in the fuel system, crank didn't like running in diesel. The crank is no doubt junk but the block is probably usable, just a long way from you.
