Hello,

This is my first post, but have been lurking for a while. I have a Cat 955H Traxcavator that had an oil pump failure/spun the center bearing. Crank is toast, etc.

I have sourced a D330 engine that seems to be from either a generator or maybe a D4? The engine has some differences in the water pump/fan front parts and the oil cooling passages/mounts are different. Any thoughts on if this engine can be used/converted/or could I just take the guts out of this block and put them in the other block?

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Will

You will need to provide block casting numbers, serial numbers of engine and machine or probably more likely arrangement numbers for the two engines to get much specific help.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Alright, I'll work on getting that info tomorrow.

The new engine is a D330 4.75 inch bore 6 inch stroke and the serial is 2B3933. The old engine is maybe 60A8236? The new engine and old engine are certainly of the same series but with minor casting differences, etc. Let me know what you think about compatibility and convertability?

Thanks,
Will

The 60Axxxx series uses as D330A engine 4-1/2" bore.
The 2Bxxxx series (D330C 4-3/4" bore) is an industrial engine.
It is my understanding that these are entirely different engines that do not interchange. That being said I'm certainly not the last word on what can be cobbled together.

Thanks for the info. Do you know what the differences are other than the bore? Clearly, the engine I have has a different manifold setup and front cover setup, along with a different side oil coolers, etc but that stuff I can all modify to work. It does look like the rear bellhousing also needs to be swapped along with the flywheel.

Hi Team,
I feel OM has had one of my Seniors moments like I suffer often and mis-quoted the D330 engine bore sizes as 5.5" bore and 5.75", but I would be sure he meant to write 4.5" and 4.75" bore sizes for the respective D330 engines.

Cheers,
Eddie B.

Yup, got my fives mixed up with the fours, thanks eddie.
Just about everything on the D330c Industrial is different than the D330a vehicular engine. Flywheel housings are different as well but I see the housing to engine gasket is the same 9H5921 part number so they may interchange. Front engine support is different for the two engines but you may be able to work around that. Be interesting to see how this project works out. Please keep us posted.

Big difference between the two is how the engine is mounted. The Industrial Engine is four point rigid mount, the Vehicular Engine mount is three point with a rubber flex bushing mounted to the front cover. Attached pictures of the Industrial Engine front cover and a variation of the Vehicular Engine mounting.

Good to know about the flywheel housing. It looks like a very similar part just with a different mount so I do think it will bolt on.

The front mount on my Traxcavator is really neither of those styles, but I will just fab something up to work. I'll get some pictures just to provide info to the forum. Currently, the mounts on my traxcavator/original engine are of a solid mount (IIRC) with one bolt going down from the top and one going down from the bottom (maybe to counter the engine torque?). But otherwise, I'd say the engine mount situation will also not be a problem. I will have to convert the machine to electric fans as there is no accommodation for a mechanical fan on the industrial gear driven water pump, and the coolers, and oil filter will be custom hot rod parts at this point. Meaning, as long as you all think this engine will bolt in and "work" I'll have to just work through making it function. I'm basically "LS Swapping" this machine haha

The engine I have is very low hours and in good shape, and for the cost of it it is a better deal than going through my failed engine. The crank is toast, it needs a full rebuild, etc. The machine does have confirmed good steering clutches and U/C so it is "worth" fixing for the low hours we actually use it per year.

EDIT - I also just looked at the pictures and the front mount on mine is that style, but with different end pieces. I bet I can fab that up to work. Or just mount it in using other mounts. Further, does anyone know any way to achieve mechanical fans on the industrial engine?

You would need the fan bracket and fan from a D330c or D333c Industrial engine.
Be aware the fan will extend forward much further than your D330A arrangement. Necessary to clear the water pump that sticks out much further.

The three point engine mounting with the flex bushing mounted to the timing gear cover allows for vehicle frame flexing. Not to be overlooked.
