I have a 955-12A .. I was wondering if someone on this forum had the track adjustment procedure?? the manuals I have simply discuss the compression of the spring for adjustment, but my setup has what looks to be an adjusting rod from the spring to the front idler wheel. My books do not talk about this. They are also badly rusted and I am not sure if there is a trick to freeing them up.

the reason I am interested in this is that I popped the right track off last weekend and want to prevent this from happening again.

thanks

Nothing complicated about the adjustment....loosen the two clamping bolts at the yoke and adjust. Maximum adjustment extension is 4 inches between the two nuts. Go beyond and risk damageing the threads.

The real challenge is unsticking a rusted up adjuster. No tricks, just the usual heat, beat, wire brush, penetrant and cussing. Really bad ones may have to be torched out and replaced.

Old Magnet,

thank you for your reply... i will measure the distance when I get home.. I do know that the spring distance is more than specified in the manual... the manual calls for 18" and I recall it being more like 20"-21".

I think your looking at the dimensions for the regular D4. I don't recall your serial number but the later 12A's used D6 undercarriage so yes the spring would be longer.

my serial number is 12A-1379 and in my book it only shows the spring and not the long adjustable bar that connects to the front wheel.

That's an early one that would use the late D4 spring 6F1502.
For some strange reason Cat calls that long adjustment bar a Nut Assembly pt # 4H6853.

The 4" maximun adjustment would apply.

Some one may have messed with the spring installed length or changed the spring. The spring stops would prevent this if they are still there.

When I first bought this machine and was gathering the serial number, I noticed that the rear drive housing has a different serial number than the engine. The engine is 1379 and the rear end started 7Uxxxx (don't remember it exactly. I had just assumed that the rear end had been changed, but maybe not.. maybe the engine is a transplant...

I will check the serial number when I get home on the rear.. that might make this a newer 955.

thanks

It would have to be a 12A5793 and above to have the D6 undercarriage by the factory but who knows what mix and match has occurred in its lifetime.
