well, I was doing some grading. pushing debris and filling in the low spots.. i knew there werebranches and other hazards, but all of a sudden i see smoke and steam..

i back up to level ground, raise the bucket and shut the engine down. I get off and take a look... a substantial branch has been jammed up and bent the fan and wedged in..

the fan was bent backwards to the engine and has torn the left lower rad hose to ribbons... nothing else seems damaged...

question, will the fan come off without pulling the hub and waterpump?? there are 6 bolts that I have taken off, but fan stays firm, can I just take a long punch and give it a whack to free it up??? (i will put something to protect the rad. also, i am assuming that if the branch could bent the fan assembly, then I should be able to bend it back (maybe with some heat)... has anyone had to repair a fan before??

oh yeah, in typical fashion, i noticed the exhaust pipe for the pony was loose, so I went to snug up a bolt and snapped it right off, only to find that the flange was cracked at the other bolt and the whole pipe fell off... i guess the only way to properly repair this is to pull the intake manifold off so i can drill out the broken bolt..

I'm not sure about the 12a, but on my 955h, it was only the 6 bolts that held the fan. It came off hard because it had been on awhile and lots of crude built up. I straightened it cold, they bend easy.

thank you for the reply.. i will give it a bit of a hit tonight and hopefully it will come free and lessen how far I've got to tear into it.

ok, so i have gotten a replacement spider (fan), but I am concerned that it might not be the right one.

my parts book say that the part number for the spider is 4H7121, but the spider I took off of the machine had a part number of 9B249 between two of the bolt holes. so when I searched for a spider, I was found one that had part number 9B2498

here is a picture of the old spider

here is a picture of the new one

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff80/rditz/SAM_0462.jpg

on one of the blades i have marked where it should be notched to match the old one (if i was to do so.

the new spider has the same bolt pattern and dimensions as the old one, but it is over all 2 inches more across and not notched.

the old one looks to be modified... I could barely wiggle it out and so far have not been able to wiggle the new one in.. i think I am going to have to start the loader and the lift the buket up to get the arms out of the way..

my question is: will i have to notch the new fan to clear the lower rad hose on the left side??

and does anyone have a picture of the 4H7121 spider?? or does it cross reference with 9B2498??

thanks

The 4H7121 spider assem. for 12A5738-up (Group number 9H8381)is a four blade blower fan with square shaped blades, probably for the clearance needed. I can't tell for sure but looks to be a production change over the earlier models.
Looks like modifiers have been at work.

OM, thanks for the feedback... my parts book shows the 4H7121 spider for all modems of 12A. my serial # is 12A1739

I am going to button up the cooling system so that I can start the tractor long enough to lift the arms up and try to get the newer fan in.

if that doesn't work, I'll take the hood off and remove one of the radiator supports and try again.

I really don't want to cut up a perfectly good fan (as someone before me has)... if that is where i have to go, I will get the old one straightened, using the new one as a template for the shape.

thanks again for your replies

well, the new fan had to be cut... I managed to get it on to the hub and as i rolled it around discovered that it was hitting the hydraulic pump drive shaft. rolled it around more and saw that it was hitting the lower rad hose...

took it back to the garage and trimmed it down to match the old one and went back to install it... seemed that with a little tweak on one blade, it rolled around fine and didn't hit anything...

so I started it up and reved it to max to make sure that it didn't flex enough to hit anything... we were in business...

I graded a bit with it and noticed that without the hood on it seemed to get hotter than normal...

anyways... the ol' girl is running again.
