Hello, im looking at picking up a 951 that had a “blown” engine. Supposedly a 1971, im trying to get all serial numbers from him. It has manual track adjusters not hydraulic The engine is dissassembled and he has a replacement (looks to be a genset engine) i know i will be swapping pumps and replacing capsules at the minimum. What is your experience with 951’s? He is asking $2200 but i talked to himand he said make him an offer, he doesnt want it to go to scrap. I will add pictures tuesday (i will not be around my computer and im unsure how to upload pictures from my phone)

Hi, lil cat mec.
From my own limited experience and reports from others, the 951A was not a bad machine, the B series had over-heating issues and the C series was a GREAT machine except for one tiny minor detail - it had a habit of splitting final drive cases - possibly had too much 'grunt' for its engineering. All were pretty neat to operate, especially with a 4-in-1 bucket and rippers.

Just my 0.02.

Just an update, I asked my work (Western States CAT) if they could haul it on a return load (they were going to only be about 60 miles from it (368 miles from the shop....) got word on Thursday they would haul it for a 1/4 of the price compared to any private hauler I talked to.. here it is, the following Tuesday and it’s home!
It is a 951B, prefix 86J1212, the other engine looks to be 04R1585 from my research, they are both D330C’s

Check your s/n again on the spare engine 4Rxxxx is a D4600 engine.
I think your 4R is a 4Bxxxx Industrial Engine which would make both engines D330C's.

Yes OM you are correct, I had a second look today and it was a B not an R. I plan to change all the filters this weekend so I can see what kind of shape the rest of the machine is in.

Checked the 951 over today and it seems to be in exceptionally good shape other then the roller frames are pitted pretty good.. anyways I pulled the filters and I’ll cut them open Monday at work, all levels were good, finals were full but not over filled. No excessive debris in the screens so I think it will be worth rebuilding the original engine and fixing it up.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
