i got the converter pulled out yesterday and started tearing it apart before it got dark on me, what all do i need to look for while inside of it besides bearings? the front bearing was destroyed to the point there was a few balls missing. i havent got to the internal guts yet and have never been in a torque converter before, will there be clutch like friction pads in there?, if so does anyone know the wear limits of them or better to just replace while i got it apart? im all ears to anything anyone has to say about it, and once again huge thanks to all the help yall have given me on all the repairs that dont seem to end 😄

The clearances are all important between the components, if they have signs that they have rubbed, then you will need to see if they are still within service tolerances, otherwise you have some expensive aluminium parts to replace.

Cat upgraded there oil spec and now recommends TO4 spec oil for power shift and oil steering clutches---its supposed to lengthen the life of friction clutches with its friction modifiers.

If there is very little or no sign of those converter elements rubbing against each other, they should be OK and a new set of bearings will do the trick.
TO2 oil was all that was available when the 941 was built, the modern TO4 is better but you can't use it as an engine oil like the old multi-purpose TD/TO2.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
