so this morning i had a guy coming to haul my loader from one farm to another, i went and cranked it up before he got there to be letting it warm up. the temp was in the low 40s and i let the glow plugs warm up for around a minute and it still wouldnt crank up after a few more tries it still wouldnt crank. so i had to use some ether to get her to start and after it sat there for a while warming up, i got on it to load it and it started knocking, at first i thought it was a glow plug blowing out because i have had a few of the cheapos blow the centers out and would make a loud hissing sound from the air coming thru it. i went ahead and loaded it up and got it home and checked the glow plugs and they look to still be good. it seems like it takes about 15-30 seconds after cranking it up for the knocking to start. i took side panels off and stuck a hose to the engine everywhere i could with the other end to my ear and cant tell where it is coming from. only thing i see wrong when i took the side panels off is the oil filter has started to leak again and a fair amount at that, but i always check the oil before using it and it is still well above safe starting range on dipstick. any ideas where i should start my troublshooting? as far as i know the engine is a 330

That would be a D330C engine until s/n3884 then 3304 engine.
First thing to check would be a bad injector (makes knocking sound) by finding which cylinder is the culprit then move that injector to another hole to see if the knock follows.

Get a stethoscope (you have one in your toolbox called a long screwdriver) and listen in the vicinity of each cylinder in a couple of different places (next to injector, down side of head, top of block) to determine where it's loudest

You could also loosen each injector pipe one at a time too

If its a bad knock, remove the oil filter and cut it open to see what is in the pleats, I agree it could be an injector and you should be able to tell by swapping them around to see if the knock moves with them, but too much messing around trying everything is pointless if a bearing or piston is already breaking up and getting ready to launch itself through the block.

I always thought that you shouldn't use ether on a glow plug engine--is this because a hot glow plug will ignite the ether or because the precom chamber accumulates all the ether in a small space and creates a very pressure??

ill find me a long screwdriver and listen tomorrow, i loosened all the lines going to injectors one at a time and couldnt tell that the knocking went away, they all was spraying out diesel and could tell it was making the engine miss i guess you could say. i cant really hear the knock when idling but gets louder the more throttle i give it.

A big end bearing failing will allow the piston to hit the head causing a knock in the top of the engine when the problem is in the bottom of the engine. A common miss diagnosis.
Hope this is not your problem as it will be a major...
Good luck....

That's correct, the glow plug is the fuse for the bomb when using ether.

If cutting out the injectors didn't eliminate the knock it's time to move on to deeper issues like rod bearing failure.
