I got the wrong info on an engine and I need to verify something because it all looks good to me but I am not sure.
I have an 11a at least everything for it except the block I have a chance to get a 4v which came out of a boat can I swap some parts and make it work in a 933 cat it looks the same but I want to be as sure as I can that it will work.
thanks

ben[/quote] I know a guy that has a 933 cat loader , the engine is suppose to be good , the clutch is removed and the undercarriage is a little bad . He will take $1,500.00 for it . It can be repaired or good parts machine . 😊

If it's the basic block/head your after (D311) your probably pretty safe but everything else that bolts on including the flywheel is probably different although the injection system would be the same.

A 4V engine is a D311 starting in 1947 at 4V5001 and up.The Cat SNID book says the 4V is a diesel electric set so if it came out of a boat possibly someone adapted the engine to a boat.A 4V and up to serial number 4V5000 was a D315 so that is the bigger engine used in a D4 etc. like the 6U and 7Us have. The D311 is a 4" bore engine and the D315 is a 4 1/2" bore engine.

this was an electric set it was hooked to a generator that ran the ship I think is the way that it was set up it came out of a marina. Don't quote me on that though

om
It looks like the one that came out of mine but I cannot set them side by side to compare or even close to one another for that matter. I don't care if I have to change all the stuff over because I have it available and the price is right on this engine.

sj
just so I understand correctly the d315 was older and had the lower serial numbers and the d311 started at 4v5001 is that correct?

I probably wouldn't be interested in it unless it was really close to dayton ohio I have a pretty good bottom and tranny and just need the engine and this one is here.

it only has 800 hrs on it or so the hour meter says and it looks good. It does have the pony on it that is supposedly good that I will be selling if anyone is interested a radiator that looks like it would fit a d2 there is some other things that i am coming back with that I will have to tell y'all about when I get there to see if anyone needs them.

thanks for the help.

According to the Cat serial number book the D315 and the D311 both came out in 1947 but thet set the SN high enough for the D311 so they didn,t get mixed up.

By "out of a boat" I was thinking it would be a marine engine with heat exchangers, etc. As a generator it will be a little more interchangeable but not much.

I figured I would have to swap the pan oil pickups and maybe gov. group as long as the basics are good then I am fine. like I said the price was right for me to do a little work and still be ahead. hopefully making a little back on pony parts or other extra stuff that I have.
the pony doesn't have a carb on it and the exhaust is bad but otherwise it seems good.
I will keep you updated on the progress with it when ever I get to putting it together.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
