I have been fighting my machine for a while to get it running right and I think i may have narrowed it down to a fuel delivery problem.

I put in new injectors
new fuel filter
cleaned the screen at the fuel injection pump
attempted to bleed the injectors at the hard lines.

I keep getting white smoke and hard starting
I see there seems to be a supply and return line at the injection pump.
is the fuel gravity fed to the injection pump or does the injection pump pump it?

I'm wondering how the fuel system actually works on this thing, or if i'm chasing a different problem? It is a older machine so I wouldnt be surprised if its not getting enough fuel.

I have a later model D3b--but the fuel gravity feeds the transfer pump and it will flow out of the filter bleed.
Edy B told me that a common problem is the spring and check valves in the transfer pump--I haven't taken mine apart yet but the output pressure is only 8 psi which is way too low.

i was debating on plumbing in one of those small 12v electric pumps from the fuel tank.

How would I go about checking/repairing the transfer pump? Are there rebuild kits out there?

After reading your thread and knowing what you've done so far to resolve this problem. You should really check the timing, white smoke and hard starting are two indicators of that being a possible problem. What I need to know, is what were you doing when you first noticed this problem? When the engine is running,is it laboring and does the exhaust have a real rank eye watering odor? A few more clues would make it easier to help.

Have you found and checked the tiny screen inside the banjo bolt on the inlet side of the fuel transfer pump. You should be able to operate the fuel priming pump and get full fuel pressure, but a history of how this situation occured woudl help diagnosis.
