Lee,
From your partial serial number, it looks like you are talking about a late 1959 built 955E. We have a 12A 955 in our local museum and yes it has a D4 engine as we needed a new head. We replaced it by taking one off of a D4 parts tractor with the SN of 7U 6172. Sorry I don't know the engine model number but someone on here will provide that.
755s were made by a company that painted their farm tractors GREEN and we don't speak much about them here.

If that machine was here in the rust belt of New England in that condition.... there would be little hesitation to ad it to the stable of Caterpillar children.
The 12a use the same motor D4-6-7U a D 315 and it is a good machine
Yes, it's a 955E 12A track loader. It has the D315 engine and a D6 size undercarriage.
As others have pointed out, a 12a Caterpillar serial number denotes a 955 track loader which is certainly the machine pictured.
I can't think of a 755 Caterpillar tractor of any type, but John Deere (the green manufacturer) made one or more 755 models.
It must be a direct electric start model because the picture through behind the engine and in front of the firewall shows daylight clear through and big battery cables running to a main battery disconnect switch. If it were a pony motor start D315 engine, that space would be occupied by the 2 cylinder pony motor.
This 12a have a D4 undercariage and the starting engine ben removed
This is the closest pic I have of our 955. It's the only direct start Cat we own. We did steering clutches and brakes on it several years ago but otherwise haven't had to do anything. Its a great little loader for what we use it for. Someone may correct me, but I think the weak link is in the ring and pinion. The way it is put together when you are pushing forward with it, it is trying to lift on the ring gear instead of pushing down on it, and if it is abused can break the carrier bearing cap bolts out of the housing. If it is used as a loader like it is meant for, it will never be an issue.![]()
