I purchased my first cat last summer D4c then added a D6C last fall .. Today my SIL sends me pictures of a 755 cat loader serial number 12A74xx - its sitting out in a very wet field ..Looks good - straight . Owner says it was used last summer , runs good with one steering clutch that hangs up .. will sell it for under $ 2000.. I dont really find much info online about this tractor -do they have a D4 engine? were they an ok machine ... can anyone help me - thanks Lee

Lee,

From your partial serial number, it looks like you are talking about a late 1959 built 955E. We have a 12A 955 in our local museum and yes it has a D4 engine as we needed a new head. We replaced it by taking one off of a D4 parts tractor with the SN of 7U 6172. Sorry I don't know the engine model number but someone on here will provide that.

755s were made by a company that painted their farm tractors GREEN and we don't speak much about them here.

If that machine was here in the rust belt of New England in that condition.... there would be little hesitation to ad it to the stable of Caterpillar children.

Yes, it's a 955E 12A track loader. It has the D315 engine and a D6 size undercarriage.

How about finding parts, are the undercarriage parts available from cat ? My SIL ran out into a field a quarter mile to take pics but didnt think it had a pony motor - and it had batterys . So does it have a starter ? Janmeermans comment on manufacture by a green company confused me - Lee

As others have pointed out, a 12a Caterpillar serial number denotes a 955 track loader which is certainly the machine pictured.

I can't think of a 755 Caterpillar tractor of any type, but John Deere (the green manufacturer) made one or more 755 models.

It must be a direct electric start model because the picture through behind the engine and in front of the firewall shows daylight clear through and big battery cables running to a main battery disconnect switch. If it were a pony motor start D315 engine, that space would be occupied by the 2 cylinder pony motor.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

This is the closest pic I have of our 955. It's the only direct start Cat we own. We did steering clutches and brakes on it several years ago but otherwise haven't had to do anything. Its a great little loader for what we use it for. Someone may correct me, but I think the weak link is in the ring and pinion. The way it is put together when you are pushing forward with it, it is trying to lift on the ring gear instead of pushing down on it, and if it is abused can break the carrier bearing cap bolts out of the housing. If it is used as a loader like it is meant for, it will never be an issue.

That s/n would have the D6 undercarriage, Changed from D4 to D6 undercarriage at s/n 12A5793. Good machine but a pig to work on especially any internals. Approximate weight 21,480 lbs.
Shares a lot of parts with the U-model D4's.
Weak point is the bevel gear bearing cap on thrust side. Plenty capable if not abused.
