While working on the interlock, I noticed the clutch brake was gone again. I've put one on it before, but I don't reckon I had the adjustment right as it didn't last but about 150 hours or so. Looking in my service manual it's only got the adjustment dimension for the spring type linkage shown in the parts manual for tractors up to serial 1388. Mine has the solid linkage shown from 1389 up. The service manual is a genuine Cat Form RE00034 for 74A1-up and 76A1-up. Am I missing something in the manual? Anyone have any other info? Any help would be appreciated.

looking thru my service manual, i don't see much detail on the clutch brake....but i did find a basic nugget that might help..

1) put the flywheel clutch hand lever in the fully forward position
2) loosen locknut
3) turn rod until the shoe assembly makes contact with the brake drum
4) release the flywheel clutch hand lever
5) turn rod 2 turns clockwise
6) tighten locknut

-so basically brake shoe is loose enough to have clearance and not drag (unnecessary wear) and the brake is not applied until the last bit of travel when the lever is pressed fully forward
-the rod is vertical, left side of clutch assembly, next to the outside panel and in front of the magnetic/screen filter housing, you will see a yoke on the bottom side of the rod..and the locknut contacts the yoke to lock rod in position

Thanks, I appreciate the info. I'll try it this way this time. Going by the dimension given for the other style had it running entirely too tight.

yes it's pretty basic, as long as the rest of the pins and linkages are reasonable, brake shoe not coated in oil or grease....should work fine

- i notice with mine it takes a lot more brake effort initially until the trans oil warms a bit then it's good

I replaced a couple of pins in the linkage last time, everything seems fairly well good from what I can tell. Got a new drum to go on also. The one one it is pretty worn. I'll agree about the trans oil being warm. Wonder if a fresh oil change in the trans and flywheel housing would remedy part of that, expensive as it will be with current oil shelf prices? Plan on changing transmission oil anyhow since I've replaced the interlock shaft.

Are you using a genuine Cat brake pad? I seem to recall someone stating the aftermarket units are not the same, too soft and don't last.

The one I've got to put on this time is an aftermarket, but the first one I put on was far enough back I don't remember. That makes since though, maybe Cat uses better brake band material.

i never noticed any clutch braking/shifting difference when i changed my trans oil, nothing noticeable at all
-but changing oil is never a bad thing in my books (any brand) (any price range)

Inclined to agree with you, changing oil isn't a bad thing. I've been using Chevron bulk oils, trans, hydraulic, etc. because of the local bulk plant. They service the company I work for also. Prefer Rotella in my engines though. Had ome questionable failures after using farm store branded oils and trying to stay away unless ABSOLUTELY necessary.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
