I got this machine and it runs good, just smokes bad. Smells like fuel. Also has a fuel knock. If I crack the first injector line (closest to operator) the knock goes away. Supposedly they put new nozzles on it before I got machine, but I'm not sure. What do I need to look for when pulling that injector out? Or what process should I use to figure out what's wrong?

The capsule type injectors really can't be fixed, just replace with a new one. If you want to diagnose it down to a gnat's a$$, you can swap the " bad" injector with a "good"one and see if the knock follows the bad one or stays with the cylinder and injection pump.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Where can I order injectors and would you happen to know what tools are needed to remove it? I have to drive an hour and half to find out. It would be awesome just to take them with me.

Safest place would be the nearest Caterpillar dealer. If you have a parts book or the part number for the injector "valve" as CAT calls them, you can do an online search and get lots of hits with cross over numbers if any exist and places offering that part for sale. You will find the part number for a service group that includes the nozzle and two seals that fit around the hold down nut and under the fuel line nut to keep out dust and water etc. Or you can get the actual part numbers for the nozzle and seals separately.

I have been using global parts zone I think it's called for a couple years now. Sorry I don't have a parts book to look yours up for you.

You generally need a 1" socket and a breaker bar or torque wrench is good to remove the hold down nut........(torque to 125 #ft when replacing ......no more ....or you may damage the new nozzle)

A 3/4" open end wrench is required to remove the line, bleed the air out etc.

It would be awesome if there was a mechanic that knew these machines in East Texas around the Tyler area.

The same cylinder that if I cracked the line it would quit fuel knocking is the only nozzle that wasnt changed, it also had the wrong nut that held the body down. it was like an inch and an eighth. the top was a bit different and the rest were 1 inch..
