I have a 1937 6G Thirty that's real straight and a good running tractor. Everything works great but it has a lot of gear noise that I think is coming from the ring and pinion. The noise gets higher in pitch(frequency) the faster the ground speed and it does it in all five gears. I don't think it's a final drive since I can declutch and stop one side and then the other side and the noise doesn't change. We have tightened the ring to pinion tooth engagement and then loosened the tooth engagement (big job) and it doesn't seem to make much difference. I have wondered about oil additives or running a real heavy oil like track roller lube. I have run track roller lube in the finals of an Allis crawler for years with no problems. It slowed the leakage out of the finals way down to just a little bit. Back in the day guys would put saw dust in the rear end lube oil on cars and quiet the gears down quite a bit. Problem was the saw dust got in the bearings and they didn't like that. I certainly wouldn't do that to the Thirty. Got any thoughts. Thanks Dave

What was wear pattern on the ring and pinion gears? Bearings worn out may be the cause. The pinion and ring gear each should have there own setting.

Thanks Rome. The gear teeth have some visible wear on the forward running side of the teeth and I forgot to mention it doesn't growl in reverse. Yes you're right, the ring gear can be adjusted right or left and the pinion adjusted fore and aft. We pried around on the shafts and couldn't seem to get any movement out of them. It's probably just the wear on the gear teeth since there is no normal pattern just excessive wear. If I run it slow enough in low gear it's pretty quiet. Probably better for safety at tractor shows anyway. Ha.

I have a 1960 Chev 2 ton truck that always howled. Checked and adjusted the bearings several times. It was run with the bearing out of adjustment and gave the gears the ware to be noisy is all that would explain it because it ran that way for years. It was just much louder than most any other truck. Kind of interesting what a tinny bit of angle on gear mesh can make so much difference in the sound.

Not like your going to run it all day every day,or are you. 😉 So it seems a thicker oil may help.
