The gas tank on my 60 could be better. I either need to solder/weld a patch on the bottom and seal it or get a new one. Any ideas? We have had some discussion years ago, but since Jerry Gast left us is anybody making them now? Anyone have new/solid one for sale?

Thanks

Unless you are doing some serious work, that size tank is not necessary. One possible solution is to split the old one open and insert a smaller new tank. Could help keep your gas fresh too. G

Gary,

The tank only has some pinholes near the bottom bung. I suppose I could look into some bladder that could be put in there. is that what you meant?

drujinin,

Never thought of the Amish. I live in SE mn and there are a large group of them near here. I have only heard of their leather and wood craftsmanship but will check it out. I was in Elkhorn this past winter. Nice town.

Biggastractor,

It would be a fair amount of work to drill out the rivets on one of the end caps and place a store bought steel tank on the inside using the same filler neck. You could make some brackets for the inside and use semi-ridgid foam to surround the new tank. Northern Tool has pre-made cube shaped hydraulic tanks that could work. G

We have traveled through an area between Madison and Lacrosse that has a large Amish population. At least 2 places had signs up at the road advertising tin work and iron work. That "pig farmer"(name escapes me????) up in northern Wisconsin has had tin work done by a local Amish craftsman in his area.
As far as this discussion on the pin holes in the tank, Pony Gas tanks always get cleaned and coated with (name escapes me???), why not do this to the tank you are doing???

with just pin holes you may think about using POR15 to clean and seal the original tank, personally i would just install a smaller tank inside the original

On my rusty old tanks I cut out the bottom, make a new smaller tank to fit inside I fit the filler for the new tank inside the original filler and weld it in, you have to take off the gas cap to see the new tank installed inside, My gas 40 has a 8 gallon tank inside, all you need for play time. A friend cut his sixty tank in 1/2 where the strap goes over the tank, from that point I would make a new tank, maybe 20 gallon, install it inside and weld the old tank back together, the weld seam will be under the strap. of course if the tank is all dented up and ugly it wont change that, the other option is a new tank, if you want it oem I am sure someday someone will build them, or I have considered having a tank made for my 30 and 60, stamped heads, with a rolled shell and welded seams, the long seam would be sub ark welded and the heads mig welded, I would make mine with 3/8 outlet, the tanks I have found all have 1/4 inch outlet, good luck finding a sediment bulb to fit a 1/4 inch outlet

Guys,

Thanks for the ideas. I have some things to check out and after running it in this years show's I'll get to work. I like the idea of a tank within a tank, but the way that 60 uses fuel it can't be too small.

Hello, If the pinholes are not too big, just solder them up with some 50/50 solder. I have fixed lots of galvanized gas and water tanks with solder and have had no problems, you just gotta make sure the metal is good and clean for the solder to tin good. Caterpillarman
