I recently started restoring a '53 D47U using parts from another old D4 of unknown vintage-(serial plate missing). I'm having a good time so far but have 2 questions. My '53 has a 60"track while the donor D4 has a 40" track. The '53 also has 20" track plates vs 13" on the donor. Was a 60" track common? One other question. After checking with several belt suppliers, I found that a link-style fan belt is no longer available. This means I will have to remove the hyd. pump. Is it splined into the coupling on the crank pulley? Sure hope so.

The parts D4 sounds like a 6U series which was a narrow gage machine. I recently aquired one. They built over 18,000 6U's and built over 43,000 7U's. Which would make the narrow machine only half as common. I would say neither is really rare though. Dandy Dave!

Thanks Dave. That's interesting. I'm brand new to bulldozers, so I may ask some strange ones sometimes.
Thankyou too M Diesel. Those linked belts were exactly what I was looking for. I shall inform my suppliers. As is, I was able to order the original solid belt from Finning-(Cat dealer) and was able to open up the hyd. pump coupling enough to get the belt through. It was a great trip to Finning in Port Kells B.C. though. I sat down with the Parts Dept. chargehand who was 57 as well. He took a keen interest in my D4 and got me a powertrain manual. He showed me the manual on CD. It looked good. I have to remove my steering clutches so he got the service manager to describe the procedure to me while the parts man showed me the complete procedure in the manual. Good bunch of guys.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
