On my D2 the air cleaner canister is completely filled with 70 years of dirt. I want to disassemble it for cleaning. for the life of me I can't figure out how its built. I see no evidence of spot welds or other ways to hold it together.

Anybody had one apart? I need your help!!:noidea:

I'll have to admit, I've never had one apart other than take the lower element out. .I just soak 'em in a bucket of diesel for a day or so, then start sloshing it up and down in the bucket 'til no more dust/oil/dirt comes out. Then I do it once more for good measure, let it "drip dry", put it back on, refill the cup and it's good to go.

John,
when you do get it disassembled, douse the steel gauze element in diesel and set it on fire. It will burn up all the oil and any dirt contained there in can just be shaken out/tapped on the concrete, then follow that up with a quick rinse with mineral spirits or gas or some such.

Cheers,
Neil.

Thanks Ol'_Grump[ and Neil.

I did not set it on fire but did soak it in my parts washer for a few days and blew as much dirt out of it as I could.

It never occurred to me to set it on fire but now I've already got it reinstalled.

I may at a later date put this assembly on the shelf and install a paper one. I think they will fit as I looked at my 9U and it looks like it has the same mount.
