My old D-2, 5J1404SP kicks the pony out the first time a cylinder hits, but will not crank it long enough to get it running. I have had an old RD-7 and a 2U D-8 that I could hold the pinion in (carefully) until the engine fired enough to keep running. I can't seem to do this on my D-2. Any suggestions?
Do you have the manual? You should be able to adjust the pinion latches to hold to a higher rpm.
I think maybe your pinion assembly is messed up as latches rounded. screws loosened and missing,etc--could also be the engagement lever assembly--open the tiny inspection plate and see if you can see or feel something amiss.
