I need know if you have to remove the water pump to remove the pony motor or does the pony motor have to be unbolted and separated in the middle to get it out. It only has about an inch to slide forward before it hits the water pump. Help!

Your pony motor will come off with the water pump in place. The pony motor and pinion clutch housing have to come off in one piece, cannot be seperated on the machine. When you unbolt the pony motor and clutch housing, the hole in the bellhousing is big enough to allow you to tilt the pony out at the front and away from the water pump, until you can get it to clear. It takes some positioning of the pony/clutch assembly to accomplish this, but that is the way it's done. Another thing that helped me was to engage the pinion to shorten the assembly a little before attempting to pull the assembly.

Here are some pictures of the pony rebuild I did on my 2H series RD6 last spring, it is the same basic setup as you have on your Diesel Forty. I made a bracket to lift the pony with, figured out all the balance points to keep it level when assembled and also keep the approximate angle at which it mounts to the Diesel block.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
