Ok - I have about had it with fixing the pony game. After searching I see a lot of stuff from old magnet, but none of the links work (for me). I know I need to cut a hole in the case, my good friend will do that for me
( right? Mike?)

What part number do I need for the correct starter to use?

The tractor lives in central Cal, will never see freezing temps. I can build the battery tray, wiring etc. But would like to see how others have succeeded at this .

Sorry I could not find this - I'm sure it's here somewhere !

Are you going to remove the Bell housing to do the drilling? From what I've been told, it's always better to do it that way than trying to drill the hole with the Bell housing in place.

Hey Tognot,

OldMagnet attended CatNight tonight. He will be traveling tomorrow. I'm sure he will be looking in soon.
My 5j has DE start. The batteries sit where the pony was. They are special narrow sized batteries by Cat that fit right in the spot. I just put new ones in today. I'll have OilSlick take pictures tomorrow and post.

Hey Not Head, you just did a bunch of pony motor tuning and fixing it's clutch. You were so happy it was starting on the first rope pull. Now just take the pony back off and figure out why it's knocking. Your nice narrow gage orchard model will retain its value better if kept original with the proper color. It will probably cost more money and labor converting it to direct start.

My D7 that your using cost me about $800 to convert it over to direct start. It already had the hole in the bell housing while you don't.

Since I can't post pics I'll text them to you tomorrow.

Thanks dozerman - that's a piece of info I didn't know. I have heard its tough to get the hole exactly correct.

I figure oil slick could do that if he'd quit whining about my tractor's color

Thanks 7puller keep an eye on mike.

Are bell housings interchangeable from the j series to the u series?

Also, does anyone have personal experience with the kit that bolts on top of the case ( takes the place of the pony) ? A starter then spins the original pony idler gear - you keep the original pinion.

It seems some think it's a bad idea, but others have said it works great.

I don't know about interchange with the bell housings....

I just left my Pony there when I added the starter on my D2 5U - found my starters (4) at a scrape yard dirt cheap. The measurements for center point for hole is available - just takes a little time and patience to drill.

Restore49, which starter did you use ?

I read a Delco 42 MT was correct. What vehicles did the starter I need come on if I go the wrecking yard route ?

Thanks

42MT - I just downloaded a photo to take to the yard - easy to tell the difference. Found a company that would sell just the beveled gear for original Bendix on my junkyard 42MT. The 42MT is very easy to work on / rebuild. Eric Jensen started a thread with a lot of info. I could ship you one but the postage would be a killer. I think there are some photos of my installation - solenoid down which is working just fine.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
