What are you saying?
1) you are trying to repair in place without removing the pony?
2)the gear bushing is bad but you are going to replace the shaft?
3)repairing in place by pulling the shaft to remove the gear?
You will have to remove the pony, the plate, then the gear. If the shaft is rubbed up, then you might get it out--- with difficulty . Then have to replace it. Let us know !
Pony is off. I got it running off the grader so it was easier to get to everything. I guess the cover I'm trying to remove is the rear flange cover, but something is holding it down tight underneath the freeze plug I removed over the shaft.

If I recall correctly, that cover has two dowels, so you'll need to start with a couple of putty knives to start working it off, evenly so it doesn't bind on the dowels. It will also be stuck to the gasket so the putty knives will free that up too. Stock, nothing retains it under that freeze plug but it might have some suction from the oil so you'll need to wiggle it or use your air gun to blow some air in there
Thanks Neil. I already worked the putty knife all the way around, separated gasket. I just wanted to be sure cover didn't have a recess and shaft had shoulder, and I was about to crack something. Thanks again.
Hi Texasbanton,
When you try and take the plate off dont forget to undo the two bolts that go through the manifold to the plate . The othe place is the shaft that the gear runs on goes into the plate you are trying to get off so you may need spray some of your favorite loose juice on it, it will help some.
Regards
Rax what you're saying is shaft comes out first? Does it unthread from pony block, or is it pressed in? The shaft has the threaded hole in the top, can I ran a bolt with a jamb nut on it into threaded hole and unscrew shaft from block?
The shaft never comes out unless it is damaged. It is a very tight fit I'm sure.
That stub shaft is pressed and pinned in place. There is a pocket to access removal of the pin but it is offset to where it is near impossible to remove. I have not been successful at removing that shaft. Also rare to have one worn enough to require removal.
