I've been following this forum for a couple weeks and have really enjoyed the amount of help/information being given for these old tractors. I bought ser# 3510 cat ten as a restoration for when my son gets older, he's 4 mos now but times flying by. Basically I would like to get it running before I park it and wait for him to get older. It's missing some parts like correct carb, air cleaner, gas tank, ignition switch and heat assy. But I was told it ran when it was parked, we'll see. I visited John Matta a couple weeks ago as he's an old family friend but he's sold all his tractors. He did say that he was probably the one who told the old owner to put the carb on that it has. He said it was a fix he told people to do when their old carb got bad. I think it's a model A carb but not sure.

I'd like to start with the simple stuff like the ignition while I collect the rest of the parts. Does anyone have pics of the switch or can tell me how it is wired? There's some wires coming from the mag other than the spark plug wires but I'm not sure where they go or what to do with them. Thanks Matt btw, I'm in southern ca

Welcome to ACMOC 025, that Ten will be a perfect tractor to restore. How is John Matta going, I spoke to his son Jim over a year ago and at the time his Mom, Mrs. Matta was very ill, they were worried they might lose her, I hope that wasn't the case.

Nice one Matt - I'm sure Mom didn't see through that one at all! My hat's off to you sir : ) Need pictures of the boy and the tractor, because when he is old enough, it'd make a great montage.

Unfortunately his wife passed away. Johns hanging in there though and Jim is helping out a lot. John really lit up when we started talking tractors, it truly is his passion. He still has a lot of his parts that he cast. I'm hoping to bring the ten by for him to see when it's running. He had some cool stories to tell

She said absolutely not to the tractor until I told her about restoring it with Matthew. Then she thought on it and maybe liked the idea, not sure. Honestly, I think it'll be something good and educational for him. I'm a general engineering contractor and own heavy equipment. I think it'll help him understand mechanics which I think a lot of kids don't get these days.

Other than that I'm having a hard time not going full throttle on a restoration right away😊. I'll post a pic of him sitting in it when we get a chance

Go hard on the Ten now and get her restored is my advice, you will enjoy the challenges, just buy a second Cat to share with your son at a later date. :eyebrows: I'd suggest a Thirty because they have a nice wide seat two can ride on, and a hand clutch a child can operate, so good to learn on, plus they are one of the nicest looking old crawlers around in my humble opinion.

That is sad news about Mrs. Matta, it must be hard for John and the family
