Was there every a factory Cat oil clutch used on a 3406? Kinda like the clutch in say a D8 36A but for a 3406.
A two speed power shift like used in the D8L SA would be even better but that's likely a tall order.
Need one for a project we are working on. 400 HP.
RN, Could you use a torque convertor? or a dump truck style torque convertor with lock up instead of a clutch set up? (cat769-773) I suggest as it maybe easier to get a hold of including parts, twin disc would be a good option for a clutch set up just need to make sure you take care of it and service etc, we had twin disc clutches in mulchers powered by 3412 engines, manual engage and automatic release via electric over hydraulic cylinder. hope it helps Busso
I can't imagine there are many D8L SA clutches around - there were only about 400 of the units built and I'd imagine most of the spare parts have been either scrapped or no-one knows how to find them in some dusty warehouse corner. Still, it could be good to get your hands on one - two-speed hydraulically-actuated clutch with feathering. If Twin Disc make that same functionality, you'd be golden.
Tell us more about the project : )

Basically a D8N SA. Found a D8N with a bad torque converter for cheap. Want to make it into a pull tractor. Replace torque divider with a direct drive clutch. Keep the 3 speed powershift. I have seen a D9G set up this way.
I'm afraid the common dry clutches used in stationary applications won't hold up. Especially if I were to use it for dozing.

That would be ideal, but a 769 torque converter is too long to fit in the space I have to work with.
Would a dry clutch not hold up because you're increasing the torque output of the 3406? Reason I ask is because modern truck clutches these days are good for 2500 ftlb but perhaps you'll be exceeding even that?

Dry clutch would easily hold the torque. Just won't have the life span of an oil clutch.
Got it, that makes sense. Although : ) it seems to me that those puller tractors seem to get rebuilt every few pulls anyway. Maybe I only see the amateurs round here.
Well, anyhoo, I'd love to hear what you end up with as a likely-unrealizable daydream of mine is to have a D8L SA, which could be approximated with the right aftermarket clutch

Not that kind of pull tractor - just a regular old farm tractor.
