i am about to do a oil change on my truck engine and was wondering what cat originally used in this engine. one time i used 15w40 shell oil in it and did not like the way it performed. after the oil got warm and a couple miles down the road i checked it and looked a little to runny for me. i do not want a repeat of this event so i would like to use the oil that cat used at the time they manufactured this engine. thanks in advance.

That oil should be ok, Im using Kendall Super D 3AE 15-40 in all the older engines, does very well in all temps. Do you have any fuel getting in the oil? Might want to run an oil sample.

i never seen or smelled any fuel in the oil. alwasy had its nice black look to it when i changed it. if 15w40 isnt hurting it, i can always add some lucas oil stabilizer to it to make sure its doin its job.

15w40 should be fine , if its getting very hot and going thin then its a cooling issue , or poor quality or diluted oil maybe, but as long as your oil pressure
is ok not much to worry about IMHO ...

Hi Jake,
as I get out my flack jacket, Cat recommended straight 30 weight old technology oil, depending on seasonal ambient temperatures, for these engines.
Ones I have encountered running with 15-30 etc tended to burn oil, especially in low horse power applications.

Cheers,
Eddie B.

dont worry edb i willl be your tail gunner and help keep them off our tail lol. just call me a young old person i guess. i always stuck with what the manufacturer put in them when they first come out. i get that newer oils can handle and probably even protect better, but i kinda like to keep things original. its like my brothers truck, he has a 1975 gmc single axle dump with a 6-71 series detroit engine in it, if the oil aint thicker or heavier weight, then its gonna leak all over lol. but thank you all for your input, im just about ready to change it and take it for a road test.

Dont think you can wrong with either Shell 15-40 or 30w. Seems like even when changing hot 30w its just like water in my old 1160.

some food for thought, while being employed by the largest redi-mix producer around the great lakes, many of the
new trucks[approx 25 to 40 yearly] came with the cat engine, all were eventually replaced with international 466
cu.in. engine, many cat engines laying in the yard rusting away.[when I retired there were approx. 1000 trucks available on a daily basis, minus those in shop]

Hi Leon,
I'm interested in which Cat engines were not holding up. Must have been fairly small to be replaced with 466s which I in do think is a great medium application engine.

in my many years experience with Cat engines most customers swore by Shell 15w-40, just a few complained of increased oil consumption in certain applications, if you don't have an oil consumption problem leave it. You could try a different 15W-40, but this is the oil recommended by Cat and the one which should be used.
