That's correct but the shim washers are used so that the glow plugs do not interfere with the fuel injector lines.
Hi Team,
as CCJ and Om said, these washers allow the glow plugs to miss vital injection lines, rocker cover, wiring etc.
As best as I can recall these washers were supplied with each new glow plug type pre-chamber.
Washers were either colour coded and/or simply numbered with a 1, or 2 etc. after the P/No as to thickness.
A supplied segmented chart allowed one to select the correct washer. Different charts were used for different engine models.
The chamber was first assembled into the head with a standard washer and, depending where on the segmented chart the glow plug hole was situated, that decided, from the chart, which washer to use.
I recall these coloured washers were kept in the head rebuild area, at The Dealer, on a board, on hooks, in order of thickness.
Cannot recall if in later days the washers were given a separate Part Number for a particular thickness etc.
Have looked in my old literature but have not found anything.
A check with The Dealer's "Numerical Parts Record" using the standard washer Part Number may come up with a Service Magazine, or another publication like a Special Instruction telling of these possible later Part Numbers.
3 pages of Service Magazine May 21 1957 covers the segmented charts I refer to above.
I will look tomorrow for more data and post the above Serv. Mag. article when I fire up the old XP desk top that is compatible with my steam driven scanner.
Cheers,
Eddie B.
