Can someone tell me the year of the 2u3460 ? Will I be able to change over the transmission and clutch from the 17744 to the 3460. The 3460 has the slide shifter and is popping out of first gear. Clutch in 3460 will not stay engaged, moving it around has been quite the task. Any input is appreciated.
D7 Doug.

Doug - I believe that the swap you're contemplating is too difficult to achieve, due to the vast amount of changes between the two tractors production periods.
2U3460 is mid-1947 production, and 2U17744 is mid-1952 production.

In the intervening 5 years and 14,284 tractors, there were numerous major changes to the transmission, clutch and flywheel area, between these tractors.
The first change (unrelated to the transmission) was increased engine HP at tractor S/N3532. The belt HP went from 131 to 144HP and the DBHP went from 113 to 130HP.
This involved changing the rack setting and increasing the engine FL RPM from 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.

The major change of course, was the new pressure-fed, constant-mesh transmission, from the old slide bar style, at S/N 2U5307, in mid-1948.
This change also entailed a new lightweight flywheel, as well as a whole new transmission.
In fact, not only was there a whole new transmission .. the entire rear housing (case assembly) was redesigned. The transmission cover was shortened to about 2/3rds of its previous length, and the front half of the case assembly .. the section housing the transmission, was redesigned.
The changes were major and substantial, and you will only be able to make the swap if you change everything from the flywheel to the final drives.

In addition, from the introduction of the pressure-fed transmission at 2U5307, there were regular and major upgrades, between 2U5307 and 2U17744.
There were changes to gears, shafts, pump & suction bells (from 1 pump and 1 bell to 2 pumps and 2 bells), bearings, filters .. even the clutch cross shaft and clutch lever design was altered substantially.

These changes to the constant mesh transmission, are outlined in the Service Magazine dated 10-24-52, and outline all the design changes since S/N 2U5307.
The design changes cover nearly 4 pages of the SM. I don't think any Cat was altered more, than the transmission area of the D8, between 1947 and 1952.
There were three more, major case assembly design changes alone, between 2U5307 and S/N 2U16900, involving new case assembly P/No's.
In every case, where the design changes are referred to, as being interchangeable with earlier tractors .. the interchangeability is limited to S/No's 2U5307 and up.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
