Recently purchased 1960 cat D8h 48a cable dozer. Been sitting 15 plus years. Got running but blade lever very hard to move. # 29 cable control unit works but control lever froze pretty good. What the best way to free it up?

Welcome to Cat land sounds like a big fun toy. Not my area of experience. Spray lube what you can see as pivot points. Cat did not tend to over complicate things so maybe that will be enough. And putting your post on top maybe one of the more experienced ones in cable control units will help.

See if you can establish which part is seizing - the control lever shaft next to the seat or the internal workings of the CCU. If it's the lever shaft, you can disconnect it from the CCU and work some carb cleaner followed quickly by some penetrating spray down the tube and work the lever to and fro. If necessary, you can always disassemble the shaft/tube, clean and shine them up , and reassemble with an anti-seize grease

Hi, Palms4.

The easiest way to find out which part or parts are 'being difficult' is to disconnect all the linkages one by one and work them individually to check them. If you start by disconnecting the control lever from its connecting rod at the bottom, you check that out, free it up if it needs it and then works back from there.

If the machine has been sitting for 15-plus years, there is a fair chance that the issue might be with the bearings at the top and/or bottom of the control lever down shaft and tube.

As Neil said, plenty of 'loose juice' and some anti-seize grease are often helpful.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
