hello. i was adjusting my rod bearings on the 22 and noticed that the wrist pin on #3 was eating the cylinder wall. what kind of clips do they use ? is it the normal circlip or a snap ring. im thinking it is an old wound . it ran ok and didnt realy smoke. i noticed the little bit of blowby. im going to try and pull the piston down enough to see if the wrist pin is secure. any thoughts would be appreciated.. mike.

My 22 had aluminum plugs that fit in the side of the piston. I don't remember the piston having grooves in it for the snap rings. Jeremy

I seem to recall reading recently in a 1930's Service Magazine, about the change from the aluminum plugs for wrist pin retention, to snap rings.
I'll see if I can find it again. Long grooves in a bore are bad news, they increase oil consumption and blowby by a considerable amount.

There is a clip on YouTube showing the piston been machined to take the snap ring instead of the plug, piston is out of the engine.

This is not a good thing, how deep has it dug in? If there was originally an aluminum plug, it was obviously left out when it was last down. Most of them used a snap ring, some were round spring wire and then there was also a normal type snap ring. I have seen them come out before (usually due to incorrect installation) and it wreeks havoc on the cylinder. On a modern snap ring you will have a sharp side and a rounded side, put the sharp side facing out and on all types place the gap pointing up.

Years ago on the diesels I saw the inserts in pistons but it was a big improvement when they went to snap rings.Even the early D4 7Js had the inserts to retain the wrist pins but showed the change at 7J834 and up to the snap rings.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
