yikes ,, I will try to do it myself for that reason,,I have" more time than money" on some things, maybe things will change if i hit the lottery...where did you guys get your bushing stock to make the necessary bushings??,,, just came back from the local Cat dealer in Madison and everything on the pivot shaft( and lots of other small parts) is unavailable or obsolete...I think i figured out a way to determine the length of the spacers, but if someone has original dimensions somewhere i would be very interested... dave
Just buy some suitable diameter bronze pipe from a local foundry, Engineering shop, or bearing shop, it's easy to find, here in Australia it cost me about $US90 for a 12" length, but you will need around 17" in total I think to make 4 new bushes assuming it is similar to the D2.
Just run a bead of arc weld down the inside of the old bearings to shrink them slightly, then they will drive out with a few good belts with a hammer. They are an "interference" fit from new, so allow around 1 thou per inch of bearing diameter when machining the new ones and put them in the freezer overnight before driving them in.
When welding up that old shaft some folks like to preheat it first, then weld a couple of beads at a time on opposite sides of the shaft, not opposite ends, opposite sides. This apparently helps prevent the new welds twisting or bowing the shaft. I've been told to put the shaft in a box of lime powder too, to slow down the cooling process.
I did my D2 shaft over a few days, didn't preheat it and didn't use lime and had no problems at all, and that's how my Fitter and Turner neighbour told me how to do it, I just didn't get it really hot each time.
My ACME buddy "Farmer3" up in New York State paid about $150 from memory to have his D2 shaft welded up and machined back down by a local Engineering shop, and that is a good price because it takes quite some time.
My 22 wrecks are narrow guage, so don't think you want my spacer details, but there are lots of wide 22's in the USA, someone should chime in soon.

Mike
