the book that I have says to time your mag on a cm 4 to the mag mark on the front pulley, I do not have that mark, so I found tdc on compression stroke measured the circumference of the front pulley and marked 30 degrees btdc to time my maggy.this is what my book says. my original mark when timed is about 60deg btdc. it didn't run quite right ther that's why I rechecked the timing exactly. at 30degrees it starts but runs worse am I correct in setting timing at 30 degrees..
my mag has just been rebuilt, new leads new sparkplugs set at correct gap and a rekitted carby,
any suggestions?

Most of the hand cranked engines have an impulse on the mag. I've always timed the mag so that the impulse trips just as the piston reaches TDC. The advance is set when the mag is running and the impulse not engaged. Any earlier and the crank will kick back and any later the you won't get the power. There should be a degree number marked on the impulse, that will be what the advance will be when running.
