Another 22 is back from the dead (37 1J) in Washington state. Got it running today but it is idling high and the carb adjustment doesn't seem to help. I am gravity feeding gas into the Zenith K5A carb. Idles about where it seems like it should with the choke pulled out. I had the governor off when I was installing the Mag and had to bend the spring hook a little so it would stay in place-not sure if that has anything to do with my problem.

As you can probably tell, I'm no mechanic so I would appreciate you "dumming down" your response to my level. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Dave, please tell us what exactly it is doing at high idle....does it act like it is running out of gas? Or making a popping sounding? That will help us help you!

Thanks Wyocat.

It just revs at high rpms and doesn't seem to let off when I shut the throttle down. I think maybe my problem is that I don't know how to adjust the throttle control mechanism. No popping or misfiring, just running at high throttle.

By the way, I really enjoyed your Youtube video on the first start of your Citrus 22. I went to first grade in Laramie and lived in Casper til I was a sophomore in HS. Then off to the Pacific NW.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi Dave,
seems like you may have seized linkages. See if you can get it to slow down by moving the throttle linkage at the carby by hand.
From my parts book it looks a fairly complex system of linkages on those units, so there are plenty of places to get seized up.
Never worked on this area of one of these, but, it looks like on the rear top right hand side of the timing case under the leather boot the linkage needs to slide in the housing to alter the gov. spring tension to change the engine speed. If this is seized--most likely place--then the unit will stay at the one speed setting. Another place looks to be at the transfer/crossover shaft across the rear of the engine.
Lets know what you find and we can go on from there.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Dave,
stand on the right side of your 22. Move the throttle back and forth on the back of your tank. You should see all of the linkage moving to where the rod goes in and out of the governor. You should also see the lever coming out of the side of the governor moving as well back to the rocker shaft that goes betweeen the jugs of the engine and over to your carb. If this does not move then your problem would be in the area.

Thanks for your comment on my video. Its always fun to see a tractor run for the first time after many years of sitting. That particular tractor was bought on ebay of all places and was missing many pieces....kind of a small basket case if you will. There is an old post on here somewhere showing everything that I did to my Citrus 22. Many thanks to friends for helping me track down all of the parts for it!

I hope this info helps you get yours running better. Keep us posted on how it goes!!

I appreciate your help guys. I'll follow your advice and let you know what I find!

This is my third 22 over the course of 35 years. Also had a 2 ton and a couple of Cletrac crawlers, but the 22 is it for me. I'd like to get this one running well.

Sentimental value to me. My Grandpa was an orchardist here in the Yakima Valley of Washington and used his 22 to pull his spray rig up the hills of his pear orchard when the ground was wet and the wheel tractors just dug trenches. A spray rig with a Chrysler industrial engine and a 400 gallon tank full of spray solution was a pretty hefty load for a wet hillside. There were lots of old Cats used in this part of apple country for many years. My grandfather's first Cat was a Twenty.

This is what I looked like at 8 years old when my Grandpa cranked up the old 22: :jaw:

Thanks again.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
