Hello , remove the mag cap , remove the two bolt/screws the hold the impulse coupling and 4 bolt under the mag and it will come off , - https://oldcroak.com/ct-4-caterpillar-magneto-service-parts-manual/
Bruce Oz. Wow Thanks that really helps look like the points are accessible from the top cover.
Bruce knows almost everything about Twenty-Twos so ask him any questions. Ray Puffer has fully rebuilt his Twenty-Two so also has experience on his machine specifically. I know a tiny amount about them compared with Bruce and Ray by virtue of looking after my cousin's 1J. These are great tractors and very simple so will reward you with getting the basics right. Get them right early (ignition, carburettion, clutches) and you'll have hours of enjoyment. I really enjoy running my cousin's tractor. Edit for testing purposes - ignore.__PRESENT
Nice to see another CAT22 with a dozer blade. What S/N is yours? Mine is 2F5209 (1935). My late brother-in-law had three CAT 22s, only this one with a blade. As Neil said, I am nearing completion of a total mechanical rebuild of my 22, so I have learned quite a bit about those old CATs the old fashion way, by making mistakes and figuring things out as I go. I'd be glad to offer advice if I can. As for magnetos, mine is not original, it is a Prestolite, but they all work pretty much the same. As Bruce said, removing and replacing is a pretty simple process, just be sure to note the position of the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley and the rotor position so that you do not mess up the mag timing. My 22 was running when I got it, so my philosophy is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I did check out the points and cap contacts and cleaned them up a bit. Hope to be starting my 22 pretty soon. Will have a big party, with many adult beverages. Neil, do you want to drive in for the party? Ray Puffer
Heck yes Ray, let me know when so I can book it out. Who's taking care of the videography?
Neil,
I'll give you a heads up when I am able to project a start-up party date. I will be inviting several friends who have helped with the restoration project, including my friends at Progressive Machine and Design (PMD) in Victor, NY. If someone from PMD drives in for the party perhaps you could ride together? I'll let you know. Ray
Thanks for all the help guys I really appreciate it! I seen the tag that I think is the serial number tag but its painted over I will try to wire brush it off and get the number and post it... I am hoping to get spark change the fluids and get it fired up. I found the cross over spring is broken too they had a chain and binder holding the front up so that will need to be addressed. I was going to put the blade on my D2 but I think I am going to try to save this little tractor I am really starting to fall in love with it, its my first gas Cat I have owned a mountain of D2's D4's and a 1936 D6 I love the old rattle and smoke cats but I am really starting to get excited about this one.
Thanks Again
Ken
Rather than wire brush it, put some paint dissolver on it and monitor it closely. One of the problems with those tags is that folks scrape or brush them and doing so reduces the readability. The tags are either brass (early) or more commonly aluminum or pot metal and they don't stand up well to abrasion
Ken,
Actually, there are two ID tags on the 22: one is on the left side of the engine block, and the other is on the right side rear of the transmission housing. I agree with Neil, do not use sandpaper or a wire brush to clean them off. Ray
