I need help. I installed the new starter on the engine (the hole was already there)and it will not engage the teeth on the flywheel, almost seems it like the teeth are to wide on the drive gear as it seems the teeth are riding on the outside edge of the ring gear? its a 11 Tooth drive I ordered from Tridiode on Ebay who has a great parts selection for starters. I called Wayne today and he is shipping me a 12 tooth. Does anybody know if they made different ring gears? any help will be apprciated! I'm needing to move a bunch of snow here in North Western Ontario where its about 30 inches deep. no melting yet and my road is getting narrow

with a d 311 motor and a starter hole in the bell housing from caterpillar you can not use a after market starter.the after market gear is to big and will not slide in to the ring gear. you need to find an old 40MT starter and then everything will fit together.

Are you sure you have the correct "hand" starter drive and starter rotation?

I know it's a lot of trouble, but if you take the motor and solenoid off the back of the starter, you can more easily check the fit and engagement and perhaps see what is hitting what better. Could even take the drive by itself and roll it in the ring gear teeth to check the fit.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Thanks for that tip, i'll give it a try tomorrow. Yes, I'm pretty sure it the right match as they are both beveled upwards.

Thanks. That would be a big chore in these parts. I have a good off set match of the drive end housing and you are probably correct, the starter drive is probablyly to "fat" to slide in.

Yes, that is the problem. The original direct electric starter drive for the D2 has a pinion that is 1/8" smaller diameter than the conversion drives. Either find an original D2 starter (not D4 or D6) or drill out the mounting holes on the new drive end housing (1/2" to 5/8" I believe) and offset grind the starter hole 1/16". Stuff some insulation wool in the starter hole to keep the grindings under control.

Frequent problem and solution.
