I've got a dilemma. I am fixing a 212 Grader and the cutting edge replacements don't match. Cat is saying that the direct replacement for a 1D3604 (RH) and 1D3605(LH) cutting edge is a 9J3862. The problem is the 1D cutting edges were 60" and had one end that wasn't beveled, depending on the right hand or left hand edge. The 9J edge is 59-7/8" which when bolted up leave me with a 1/4" gap between the cutting edges. Cat is saying this is normal,....

I'll try to add a photo

Thanks for any ideas

Quickest solution might be to build up the end with some hardfacing or whatever it's called

Work with cutting edges every day, that is nothing to worry about and when using it you will not notice anything.

Won't notice anything, except when you get off machine, you will see a bunch of roots, wire, etc. caught in the gap. No problem though. catskinner

Skinner, that’s the problem. Dragging a rock through the finish because the dry sand has wallered a bigger gap. If I weld one end will my treating be ruined or do I need to have a bucket of oil ready to dunk the hot edge in.

I have never seen one that has been wallowed out that bad. I have seen them burned off and still not any wider gap. It is actually not a problem at all. Been around them precision blue topping and no problems ever.

Hi, Catmandu.
If you really want to fill that gap, I suggest pre-heating the end of a cutting edge until spit sizzles on it - NO more - building up the end with low hydrogen electrodes, grinding it to fit and then put a bead of hardfacing down the built up section on the front face of the cutting edge.

Personally, I have never worried about it when the gap has been as small as a 1/4".

Just my 0.02.

Thanks to everyone for your knowledge. I'm probably made a mountain out of a mole hill.

Thanks again everyone

[size=5][size=6]Hi, Catmandu.
You might also find that if you had tapped inwards on the outer ends of each cutting edge section before tightening them up, you might only have 'arf da gap' in the middle due to a little looseness in the bolt holes.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
