I got a phone call yesterday from a local community museum near here asking if I could help start their 1939 D8 equipped with a huge Laplant Choate V-plow and wings on both sides. I have drooled over this Cat for years and jumped at the chance to help. It was drove into a viewable shelter in 2001 and has not been touched since. It looks to be in decent shape. It is the only D8 I have ever seen with full ice cleat tracks. There was a museum member in his upper 80s there today that ran it for the township in the 50s. In the summer they took the snowplow and ice tracks off and installed grouser tracks for using it in the township gravel pit on the summer. The following preliminary work took place today. The injectors pump cover was removed and all the pumps and linkage was verified to be loose and moving freely. The pony motor crankcase was overfull and smelled like gas. The pony gas was left on when it was drove in and all leaked down to the crankcase. The other compartments were checked and will be added to as needed. We cranked the pony over to check for spark and found as expected we did not have any. The cap was pulled from the pony mag, a endeavor in itself just crawl under the machine to get to it with the snowplow on. I was the youngster and crawled in. Removal of the cap let the broken rotor pieces fall out. I removed the mag and after one of the fellows checked the coils with a tester it was decided to send the mag out to get rebuilt. The museum has offered to sponsor Chapter 3s fall meeting, at which time we will be treated to the grist mill, remainder of the museum and also try again to get this old girl running. Pictures are a bit close in the shelter but here is some for your enjoyment. I really would like to see this machine plow snow again.

That is a serious snow plow. With ice cleats, if you broke through the ice, what would be left of the asphalt road?

There was no asphalt around here when that machine was in use. Our first county roads got pavement in the fifties. Most if not all township roads are still gravel.

I love that video. I watch it at least once a year. The one we are attempting to start is a little more modern on the snowplow end of it. This one has hydraulic controls for the plow in the cab and the wingman rode inside with the operator. However it does not have a cab heater. It had the sealed plastic ovals stuck on the inside of the windshields to make a primitive dual pane to help keep them from frosting up. How many folks on here remember them.

Wow, that’s quite the outfit! I’ve got work for the old gal if they need its legs stretched.

Good on you for getting it woke up again.

I am allergic to climates that might require such measures.

You caught a nice break getting asked to help out on that project Roger. If it was in my neighborhood, I'd be all over it. I hope it will go easy and keep the pictures coming. And a video of it cranking up for the first time would be great.

Roger are they going to let you plow the driveway when you get it going. The YouTube video may have my grandfather in it. Sure looks like him. I got a copy of a photo from Ryan Johnson of one we know it was my grand father in. I proudly display it above my desk.
I always wanted to try out the RD7 plow Larry M has in IA.

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
