Just wanted to share this, This is my Dads 17A D7 he has had for 22years, he just recently updated the Hydraulics and it turned out really good, First off he installed a front mount hydraulic pump my uncle built for him its 65gpm at 1000rpm totally removed the old cat unit and tank from the front, he then used everything else from a 850 case dozer his friend was scrapping, so it has case tank and control valve mounted beside operator seat and he also used the case hydraulic cylinders on the front and removed the old cat cylinders, he had to make some heavy mounts for them. So far he has the pressure set at 2250 and he loves it !!! He can pull up to a stump and suck it right out of the ground , he says the hydraulics are so strong now it will lift the ass of the dozer up and it also has good operating D7N winch on the back. Really nice old dozer he rebuilt the engine few years ago and just bought new rails from berco last month ! So he will be putting new rails on soon and welding up some rollers. This is a good old dozer and has built many ponds and lakes, Dad just finished a 20 acre lake two months ago , still going strong!!! Just wanted to share this with everyone! Thanks for looking

Good job,
What type pump was used? Vane or gear?...and does it have tilt feature?

Old Magnet, The pump that was used is a gear pump , and yes the control valve it has now has tilt , that is the next thing Dad wants to do is add a tilt cylinder. I know the pump itself is massive, it has a 2inch suction line. But he really likes it has alot of hydraulic power now compared to the old cat unit!!

I'm curious as to how he intends to configure the tilt arrangement. Back in the day of large front pumps Cat usually added a smaller pump piggy back to the tractor system hydraulic pump and eventually they went to two section pumps. Separate add on belt or gear drive pumps are also a possibility.

I don't know how those new blade cylinders compare in force but it would pay to be conservative with increased loading applied to the tractor frame, equalizer bar and undercarriage, especially the front idlers.

Yeah the control valve has tilt , he just has to plumb into it, as far as this front pump goes no issue their has plenty of flow to support a tilt cyl.

The problem is not about having enough flow, the problem is having way to much and how to control a much smaller cylinder on a large flow system.

I know he didnt have any concerns about that so im sure he has figured that part out. I will have to ask Dad how he is going about that and I will let you know, He is really good with hydraulic systems so Im sure he has a good plan of action!!

I talked to Dad he said on the control valve he has each control has a adjustable relief valve he can adjust the the pressure for the tilt cylinder. He said it wouldnt be a problem for the way he has it setup. Hope that answers your question Old Magnet , oh and I was wrong on the pump its 60gpm at 1250rpm. He did all this over a year ago and absolutley loves it !! Thanks for your interest in it!!!
