your steering clutch/brake compartments are in need of a good flushing to get rid of the oil and sludge. put the plugs back in and half fill them with kerosene and then run the machine back and forth and then drain out
the final drives should also be drained and flush out---then refill with 90 weight gear oil
Thanks for the info! So am I correct that the compartment with covers A and B should have no fluid at all? There is a drain plug on the bottom that I used to drain the water out. Also, when filling the finals, do I fill until I see the oil in the tubes? These look like add-on pipe fittings and would make it easy to fill but I don't want to over fill.
yes--covers a and b should be dry and clean
I have those pipe fittings on my d4 also--i fill to about the bottom of the fitting
you should also check the transmission--there is a plug on the bottom and loosen it up a bit to see if water or milky oil comes out---you may want to change that 90w gear oil also
That's a huge help. Thought I was right, but since I am new to this just wanted to verify. As you mentioned I also drained the plug that goes to the one labeled B in the picture below. This was very milky and there was a lot more oil than I was expecting. I assumed this was the tranny but wouldn't have thought it was 90W. How much should it take? Also, what is the plug labeled A?
Thanks again! Should have joined this a month ago!

Fluids capacities....
Oil Clutch is 16 quarts
looks like you are missing your transmission dipstick...and that you have a oil filled clutch.....

Yes I pulled the dipstick and am trying to remove the rust from it. It is completely covered and couldn't find a mark to see the proper level. It is in an Electrolytic bath right now. Turns out this dozer has been sitting up for better than 2 years. Next week will flush everything good and then replace all lubricants. Are there any screens or filters that I need to locate?
Thanks to everyone that has responded! The info has been extremely helpful. Will certainly be asking more questions later....
