Hi, having a terrible time putting in a 24 v starter in caterpillar d2 5u. Only a few ways starter with solenoid can go in won't fit up, solenoid has to be down, and all I get is a chunk. Will not spin bendx. Everything new , Starter works bench, batteries good ,starter botton good , narrowed down to starter in place. I think might be hitting hand clutch ass. Has anyone have had to shim the starter out ?
Next move
Any help would be very helpful

Is this a new starter conversion, done with boring the starter hole and bolting or are you trying to mount a late starter in an existing direct start housing. Be aware that the late starter conversion drive gear is a larger diameter that what Cat originally provided. Solution is to either use and original 40MT inertia drive starter or offset the the starter mounting hole about 1/8 to 3/16 to accommodate the late starter drive or some have offset machined the starter drive end housing.
Thank you
Seems like my whe starterfits ok. Are you sayimg gott go away from motor.1/8 away. Just having a big time problems want to do what will help
Shave the 1/8 plus starter hole so starter it's self moves to out side of the ground down starter whole ?
Thanks for help
Old magnet
Could you draw a drawing how starter should move to work.
Thanks
Your not providing enough information for me to advise. Is this an original starter or a conversion? Factory hole for the starter or has the housing been bored.
Have you tried rotating the drive end housing? What starter are you using???????
I'll send more information this morning

Solenoid is down about only way it will go in. 1956 so it has factory hole in the belhousing and seems right size. Flywheel is just under 1 inch wide no defects looks good
OK, should not be a problem. You may have to undo the six hex bolts and change the indexing of the drive end housing to get the indexing you want. Usual mount has solenoid sticking out the side. If there still is a problem measure the diameter of the starter drive gear and report back.
