With direct start ,pony motor exhaust just plugged with metal plate ? Also big air cleaner attaches to pony exhaust chamber. Anyone that has a 1956 or 57 factory original direct start. If you have time would love if you contacted me Brian 651 307 7338
yes. the pilot engine exhausts via a pipe in the intake manifold that pipe can rust out. especially if it didnt have a rain flap fitted or wasnt kept covered when not in use. (old spin on oil/fuel filters make great covers they are rounded on the end so naturally shed water. just cut the mounting flange off and pull the guts out)
that's why it would also be a good idea to thread a bung into the pilot engine exhaust pipe so you cant dust the motor. or unbolt the riser pipe from the manifold and blank both ends of the main engine intake manifold.
there is coolant galleries to blank off in the head and the bell housing if you remove the pilot engine. most people do as they mount the batteries in that location. a steel plate coated with devcon metal fix epoxy and paper gasket is all you need. (the devcon helps with corrosion resistance)
if you can find em there is factory direct electric start cyl heads that had positions for glow plugs this makes starting easier.
i'm using a manifold heater plug on my d4

Hey thanks yes goings to plug all exhaust openings. devcon metal fix epoxy is the way to go
Been looking at little worried because bolt dow are a ways from coolant return
You just sealer and gasket will do?
Thanks very much. Thers not any manuals that covers that you know of ?
