If your serial # is less than 5U13273, then you have to remove the engine to remove the flywheel. If it is above, I'm still not sure if the flywheel can be removed - certainly the clutch can be changed out but the flywheel is a larger diameter. Someone here will know

Did you remove the entire clutch cover casting? You have to pull the pony flywheel and firewall to get to all of the bell housing bolts to do so. Pictures Please.
On your other post about the gear jamming up at the same spot; Did you look for a chunk of rust clogging a tooth? Alot of times from the tractor sitting outside ,water gets into the clutch compartment and the gear sitting in the water and other crap it gets rusted.

I successfully pulled the flywheel out the clutch access hole!!!! You would not believe how tight that was, unbelievable. Had to pull the starter pinion, lift the starter motor up. the space the pinion remove gave was just enough to cock the flywheel out with a little bar action. The clunk was missing teeth on the ring gear. How does someone do that? See picture. now I need a ring gear which seems hard to find. The confirmed part no of the ring and book is 7B6248.

YOWSA!  I see now. Grind me a pound.    Yeah they're a little tricky to maneuver. But lighter than others.

That's that under your skin grinding racket when owners are too damn lazy to fix the brake and pinion!

General Gear had a new one for my 5U, had to finesse the bolt holes a little but otherwise bolted right up

might be a idea to fix the starter pinion too. while its off its part way there. becuase i would put money on it being damaged/worn too. at least crack test it make sure it right dont want to do the same job again.

Yes to a tear down and rebuild of the pinion. The 4 bolts that hold the what-cha-dingy to the pinion gear were gone. found one of them in the bottom of the case. Your right, I do not want to do this again because I did not pay attention to something. Never be any closer or easier to repair. Will evaluate clutch disc also. Seems to have only about 1/16 inch proud above tooth center. Not sure what new is.
thanks
