Is the pony off or raised to allow the pinion latching sleeve to come past the drive gear?
Usually the big problem is getting the o-ring to come unstuck. The lubrication is important and be cautious prying on the ears, they can be snapped off pretty easily
Hi Team,
from memory you may have to remove 1 or 2 of the top engine block, side plate/cover bolts to allow further travel of the pinion housing. Also you need to engage the pinion to shorten its overall length to aid in getting it out past the fuel injection pump governor cover. By your picture you have the pony off already so this is not holding it back.
As said lubrication, twisting, and gentle levering in between the easily broken ears of the housing. Sometimes moving the unit in and out a few times aids in dispersing the lube on the required surfaces of the seal and the bore.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.
The only reason im trying to take it off is to see if once its removed it will allow me to see the flywheel to help align the starter im getting ready to put in it. I bought the tractor with pony motor off already. Should I just leave it alone?? Merry Christmas everyone!!

What starter arrangement are you looking to install?

Ok, I was wondering if you were trying to install the starter version that mounts to the pony clutch flange and still uses the problematic latch mechanism drive. The pony clutch/drive has no function in the conversion that three bolt mounts to the flywheel housing unless you intend to have both pony and direct electric start. There also is no advantage to having the pony clutch removed as far as locating or engaging the conversion starter.
I can't tell from your picture whether or not you have the correct drive end housing and gear on that starter.
