Hi, my name is Eric. I live in central Washington state and I have just started collecting old iron. I just purchased a 1948 d4 from a farmer, it was sitting in his barn for 15 years. The pony motor dosn't run (bad mag) so we had to pull start it. We got the d4 running but it would bog down under load then died. I pulled out the fuel filters and cleaned the filter housing, everything was very dirty (the diesel in the tank was good). I can get new filters from napa but they are $24.00 ea and have to be ordered from wix, basically not readly avalible. Has anyone removed the stock filters and installed canister filters inline? I think that 2 filters should clean the diesel good enough, but I was wondering if it was as good as the original design? I will post pictures when I get the d4 home. Thank you in advance for any help

Hi Eric, welcome to the club. Someone must have forgotten to mention that this hobby makes $$$ magically disappear ; )
I wouldn't bother trying to jury rig something up - just flush the fuel system, clean out the relief valve by the transfer pump, fit new filters ($16 from your Cat dealer), prime, and you're good to go. Much better to stay original, in my opinion, because that filtering system works just fine. If you really want to add filters (meaning keeping the original ones maintained as well), then one member put a fuel strainer on the outlet to his seat tank. Make's it easy to drain off a sample occasionally e.g. when the weather changes.

Cheers,
Neil.

I looked on the cat website last night but I could not find filters for it. All I could find is wix and baldwin filters and they all had to be ordered. We have ordered new filters from O'Rielly but don't know when they will get here. I would like to keep the tractor as original as possible, it would just be a question of finding the parts. I know that this hobby makes $$$$ disapear, my dad collected old iron and had 37 when he died ( I have his Massey Ferguson 3165) he was a lot better at finding parts than I am.

Those filter will be available as long as you can buy any parts for this machine. They have gone up in price a lot in the last few years. But I got a bigger surprise buying a generic hydraulic spin on filter that was close to a $100.Ever Cat built in the 50's used that filter, just more of them as they got bigger.Just be very careful with your fuel and keep the tank full and drain the water out often.I still farm with D6 9u's and get several years out of a set of fuel filters if I am careful.

Just knuckle under and buy them. If you are collecting then those filters will be paid back for by the time you run a couple of tank fulls through it. Its a hobby tractor not a business tractor, then it will be a couple of years.
Besides inline filter connections leak, they will suck air and be hard starting.

Hi Team,
in time past we used to buy the filters as a Kit. 7B8624 for the U series D4's.
The kit includes 4 Elements and the Gaskets needed to do the filter change.
I would expect that the kits are likely no longer available at The Dealer, but, if this is so the Kit number would change up to individual Parts.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Thanks for the info. We got a filter from o'rilleys the other day, now we only need 2 more. We went over and installed the filter and tried to clean the magneto on the pony motor. I could not get the pony started so we towed the d4 around the farmer's potato field and tried to get it running. I was getting fuel out of the injector lines but it was not constant. We pulled the fuel line off at the fuel pump and fuel just dribbled out. I found a fitting in the fuel line that was blocked with rust and crud. We cleaned it out, put the fuel line back together and towed it some more. After 200 feet we had fuel coming out the top vent and fuel out of the injection lines in another 50 feet. I pulled on the compression release lever and it started right up, not bad after sitting for 15 years. We got it loaded on a trailer and it gets delivered to my place on sunday :clap2: Th d4 will get a good cleaning and we will go through it and paint it this winter.

I just ordered 4 new fuel filters through my cat dealer for my D4 7U, and successfully changed them all on the original fuel plate It came with the 2 needed gaskets. Needle nose pliers to get the pins out are a must have, but you can compress them by hand. It is a good time to drain the bottom of that filter assembly and wash out the gunk build up with some kerosene. Anyhow glad you got it started. Edit: damn this thread is old. sorry for bringing it back from the dead. thats what I get for searching lol

If you don't mind, what is the current part number for the set with the gaskets?
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄
