My D4 is serial number 7J9532w. The "W" is on the tractor and engine serial number tag. I have found no information on what the "w" is for and have not located any information on it. Any information would be appreciated.

Hi CatD4Dozer,

The W usually stands for wide gauge on these early dozers, later on they changed the designation like 6U for narrow and 7U for wide gauge.

Hi
Can you give me advice where to find serial number in these early D4 tractors. Found tractor which I suppose is maybe 1940 -- 1945 model. Tractor is yellow but original color is army green. It is possible that tractor is old war machine and sold to Finland when army after war was trading surplus machines.

Regards
Ismo

You won't access the serial no on the rear with that winch fitted .
The rear plate may have been removed to give a flat surface for the winch to bolt to .
However the number should be stamped direct into the rear housing. Visible if you have the winch off.
Also there should be a serial plate on the engine block. Sort of behind the pilot motor clutch controls .
Your tractor looks like a 2T series D4. Fitted with a LePlant Choate bulldozer and hydraulics.
Nice find and good luck with your tractor.

Ismo.
Value or sale price seems to vary in different parts of the world.
It often stuns me the seemingly cheap prices for tractors in USA. Also the range of rare or unobtainable to us in Australia , tractors in the US.
If you can afford your purchase and enjoy it , Go for it .
