1939 D2 serial number

Welcome to our club website. Rome is right it is a 5J series not a 3J series.

Your tractor is a 5J series D2. If you look at your last photograph taken of the rear of the machine you will see a small rectangular aluminium tag at the top left hand side of the transmission case which bears the serial number. There is a similar if not identical tag at the top rear left hand side of the engine block (when sitting in the seat), just below where the head joins the block..

If you choose to join our club (from $40 per annum) you will find a lot of D2 documents (parts books, Service Manuals, Operating and Maintenance Instructions etc ). as well as many videos on restoring D2 tractors, including two by FroghairFarm on rebuilding a D2 carburettor in the members library on the website. Although the latter is for a later model D2 than yours (a U series), I think that the carb is quite possibly the same (someone will tell me if I'm incorrect on this).

Your tractor looks a very nice example of an early 5J D2 tractor fitted with LaPlante-Chote blade.

Thats a 5J series, 50" gauge. 1939 would be 5J1263-2229 serial number range. 3J is 40" gauge, center to center of sprockets. The number on the injection pump is the pump housing/ governor serial number.

Ricmcd - Congratulations, that's a nice looking D2 you have there. Welcome to ACMOC, you'll find a lot of helpful people and good info. I would highly recommend joining as the library you get access to is like gold when you're looking for information on these Classic Caterpillars. I cannot tell you how often I have utilized it when I need info "right now".

Looking at my 3J parts manual, the carb on your tractor will be slightly different than the one on my 5U - for the most part they are the same, and the same process would apply, but there are detail differences assuming you still have the original carb.

When you look the carburetor, there will be a small round disc riveted on top. Look for the numbers stamped on the disc.This the only number you will really need. I got my rebuild kit from a place called CARBSONLY. 1-818-845-9000. Angelo
