Does anyone know something about the fill and level inspection for a 1938 Cat grader transmission? The serial is 9K4882.

The transmission seems to have two (2) separate compartments...a small one in front (about a gallon) and the rear and much larger one...14 gallons. I don't know where to fill the oil at...the fill in the cab is a large one about 2" but I am not sure if that is the place to make the fill for the rear trans. compartment!@#!!??

I have photos that I can't seem to upload here. Photos keep rotating 90 degrees!@@!?!

Any help..?

Thanks

The tractor transmissions have a similar setup with the fill over the transmission but the oil equalizes between trans and bevels gear compartment behind it. I expect yours is the same. Someone will be along shortly that has better info.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Transmission fill plug is the one in front of the shifter. Fill to level plug located on the LH side of the transmission case. Takes 10 qts, SAE 90 or 140 wt depending on temperatures.

Thanks a lot! Been looking for resolution of this for a while.

Question: According to the specs for this machine, the transmission takes takes 58 qts of oil. Hmmm

So the fill hole is in the cab then?

Thanks

My info says the transmission holds 10 quarts, the rear axle housing holds 60 quarts.

I don't have pics of the trans-axle but there is a drain plug at the bottom facing rear and a fill/fill level plug half way up the TA case facing rear; There are two housings for the transmission on the front side of the engine area, both have drain plugs.

The pics I can send show the front side of things.

For some reason the upload of photos on this form s not working. Keep getting too large or invalid alerts or they rotate the pics 90 degrees right!@#@!.

There are only two compartments involved with the transmission. Transmission fill plug takes care of the transmission. Level plug prior to 9K3282 is on the left hand side 9K3283-up is on the RH side of the transmission case. The rear axle housing which contains the pinion and bevel gear plus the reduction gear from the transmission has the fill plug on the rear of the housing, drain on the bottom. Fill to level of the fill plug.

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
