Have the opportunity to purchase a early RD4 for $1500. In pretty nice shape other then it has been sitting outside for the last few years. It was last running in February. It sputtered for about an hour before cleaning up. It would turn one way, but not the other at first, but after a while, it all broke free and turned both directions without problems. The gentleman pull started it. He hasn't ran the pony motor in years. He says its free, but he has never fiddled with it to get it running. The hydraulic pump is currently not hooked up. The blade is welded up by a couple of pieces of steel, (easily removed.) Apparently it went through a flood about 20-25 years ago when it was owned by an older gentleman. He tore it all the way down and rebuilt it from the ground up. The guy that has it now helped him rebuild it, and inherited it about 10 years ago when the older gentleman passed away, and has only driven it around since, not used it as a dozer. It is a manual T blade? Undercarriage looks to be in great shape. He said it used to be a farm tractor, and then had a dozer blade added to it, so its greared too high in his opinion to be a dozer? It does not have a winch. What do you folk think about this? Worth it? Anything I should take a hard look at when I go to look at it? What winches would fit on it? Can it be converted to an electric start like the later D4s? Thanks for any help! Jake

Looks to be life left. Blade would be "manual angle" not "T".
Are you thinking electric start pony or direct start. If direct check the flywheel housing where the starter would go. If it does not have the raised three ear boss it can not be converted. At least not conventionally.

Forgot your winch question. It would take a Hyster D4 winch but it would have to be the early version with side attachment panels as there is no provision to attach to the top of the steering clutch case.

Thanks for the input Old Magnet. I was referring to converting to a direct start and do away with the pony if possible. Were there any known problems with the early RD4s?

Not really that I am aware of although many changes came along as the model progressed.

Looks like it could be a decent machine based on one picture. It would be nice to see mome more showing the undercarriage closer. The pony might not be to big of a deal to get running. Lots of good informative posts here if you are at all mechanically inclined and if it will accept a direct starter OM is the Chairman of the Board.

Thanks for the responses. Its good to hear that I am not crazy in wanting to purchase it. I know sourcing parts for an older machine like this is getting a little harder, but I think its worth it. It is just getting my dad convinced since we are going in as partners on a dozer. That is the best pic I have of the undercarriage. I won't get to lay better eyes on it till I go see it in person.

I can tell you if i was in the states and it come up i would by it without a second thought. As I am the proud owner of one, and enjoyed the restoration coming to a close I will have my RD4 finished by the end of next week, i have totaly rebuilt the rear end, clutch, injection pump/filter housing and lots more, i can tell you you can get most parts in the states NOS you just have to look around.

As for direct electric start you will have to change the fly wheel housing with the raised boss, this is a big job as you have to split the motor and transmission, getting the pilot motor going would be a more viable option with the electric start option.

old-iron-habit - I do know what you mean by cat fever. Dad bought a mini excavator with a blade back when I was still in high school thinking that would do good enough for what we needed. It did for a while, but there are just some things that are better left to an actual dozer, and if you are gonna get one, it might as well be a classic.

rax200 - Thanks for the encouragement! Knowing you were able to very recently source enough parts to do that very nice restoration is very exciting! Since that was one of the main concerns, I think that it will be a easier decision now. Sounds like we are going to go take a look on Thursday first hand. Do you have a thread on your restoration?

While your taking pictures I would appreciate a good front view of the bell housing starter location on the 4G for my files as this is all I have.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
