My ten runs great but blow out of the radiator. Things I found... the head had been repaired at one time. Broken cyl head stud. Someone poured lead in the hole and left it.
So, I did have another T-4 head and I sent it out for surfacing. I ordered a new head gasket for the very nice people at Olsen's. Like magic the correct new gasket arrived two days later. I then spent a lot of time looking for new studs. I found that the head picture in the Cat Ten book posted on this site is incorrect. In 1929 the head has one less bolt. The pic is from a 1930 I guess as a friend has a 1930 parts book that showed both. Through my friend at Cat, I was able to get the correct count and length for the studs. A quick call to ARP in Southern Ca and a new stud kit is in the mail. My next move is to remove the remaining studs, de-bur the block surface and remove the carbon ridge at the top of the cylinders. Assuming this all works out, I will come back and post pics, info for the parts, torque values etc. that were used. I will be about $500 into the job total when complete. In the end I will have a tractor that mechanically sound for parade work.
I am sure that TEN would look good parked here with my 15's and 20's.
Interesting to know about the head bolts as well as Olsen's having the gasket.
Keep us posted, and don't forget to post some photos! JM
Yes, the cat ten would be the perfect tractor to pull behind a pickup and take to the sandbox.
I do have most of a bege pump and several period correct implements such as a tumblebug, disc, and plow.
I mostly look forward to Santa Margarita and the local parades in King City and Paso Robles Pioneer days. They run on city streets with huge turnouts of tractors and people. Both groups have Cat sixties they rumble the street with. We have a whole fleet of small tractors I hope to take this season including a TEN, Fifteen, Twenty Twenty two Orchards and perhaps the D2. Everything else of interest is just too big to haul. Recently I located a Cat pull behind road grader to match the Diesel Fifty making a pretty good combo if I can make the deal. To make the grader work, has anyone seen a bege pump that has a straight through shaft with the PTO exposed so the grader power shaft can be attached? The tractor has a period correct Kay Brunner blade utilizing the Bege.
We always enjoy the pioneer day parade in Paso! Not many places you can drive your Cat though town. I will post some pictures. Skinner
Thanks for the "Parade" shots - very suiting to match the Macy's Parade today. Happy Thanksgiving! -- cts
