What is rod bearing clearance for a Cat thirty. I have it at 3thou on three cylinders. Have not installed the fourth. Just installed new rings. Bore is decent. Seems a little tight when cranking. Noticeable difference when I back off nuts. Wondering if it’s a little tight. Thinking of adding the one shim I removed on each side. Need some opinions.

Thanks Don

Have you checked the roundness of the journal? That helps to know because the book says to measure clearance by movement. If it moves more than .012" remove shims evenly. It should not have less than .003" movement. I use a dial indicator and check in different places account for out of round journals.

Its a bit of a balancing act on a old engine when the crank is likely worn egg shape, 003 is tight in my book.

My thoughts
-is there a ball-park spec for clearance?

-my limited automotive engine building...rule of thumb....approx .001" clearance per inch journal diameter..? and that may be a bit on the tight side...you can definitely add to that and be looser with no problems..assuming pump is adequate ect...

My personal spec. is .003-.006. older style engine wide bearings, slower RPM and 30wt oil.

-ya those numbers seem very reasonable...oil weight another factor too

-seen some engines tore down and very large clearances..but ran fine..maybe lower oil pressure but no problems

Put the shim back in!
I’m certainly no expert, Only bearings I’ve ever had to adjust were in an old air compressor head, but if I could tell the crank was harder to turn when the connecting rods were tightened vs when they were loosened, I WOULD NOT run the engine.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
