🙄QUESTIONS FOR RESPONSE: WHEN MOVING, FORWARD OR REVERSE, DOES THE MACHINE MOVE IN A STRAIGHT LINE ? DOES APPLICATION OF BRAKE PEDAL HELP? DOES ALL ADJUSTMENTS SEEM CORRECT ? ARE TRACK TENSIONERS ADJUSTED CORRECTLY ? WHEN PUSHING A DIRT PILE, RAISING THE BLADE AND GOING OVER THE PILE IF NOT EXTREMLY LARGE, WHEN THE CAT HITS NEAR IT'S BALANCE POINT ( BEFORE BREAKING OVER AND SLAMMING DOWN ) PULLING THE LEVER, DOES IT RESPOND ? SORRY FOR THE QUESTIONS BUT ANSWERS HELP PINPOINT AN INTELLIGENT ANSWER TO YOUR PROBLEM.👍

First thing is have you checked the oil in the steering booster? If that's ok then proceed to
Right side doesn't steer could mean steering clutch doesn't release.........

Test by pulling both steering clutches at the same time (can you still do that with a 17A?) If the tractor stops, then your right steering clutch is releasing and your brake isn't working properly. If the tractor turns to the left when you pull both clutches back, then right side clutch isn't releasing.

Have you adjusted the steering clutches?

If brake problems are indicated by the above test, then have you adjusted those?
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

I RUN A 17A AND IT IS NEWS TO ME IF THERE IS A STEERING BOOSTER. I ALWAYS BELIEVED THE AMOUNT OF BOOST WAS EQUAL TO THE AMOUT OF PULL OR THE BOOT SIZE ON THE PEDAL. I COULD BE WRONG, JUST MY .00000000000002😈

YES STEERING LEVERS CAN BE PULLED TOGETHER. IT IS A GOOD FUNCTION CHECK TO DO THAT AFTER EVERY USE. WILL LET YA KNOW HOW BAD FUBAR IS GONNA TAKE A CHUNK OUTA THE WALLET................

If you don't put oil in it, you don't have a steering booster😆

AFAIKnow, D6 8/9u and D7 3t/4T had the same hydraulic booster underneath the seat. I know they all used the same steering clutches and brakes etc. The D7's just have an additional reduction in the final drive.

I'm confident your 17A has a similar version. Look underneath the tank from the back and see if there isn't a hex socket plug there to check/fill it.

having gracefully avoided tapdancing in a minefield, here i go again. my 17a 1101c is reportedly used by a gentleman on a massive 6 day project and he rested on the 7th. it does not have a steering booster. HOWEVER, having dug out my books and did some reading, there is a serial number break which machines above has the booster.
on my antique, the levers need 3 inchs of freeplay from the forward position, check every 125 hours. just above the drawbar are 2 square covers. these are the adjustment access doors. loosen locknut and turn adjusting nut until correct free play is achieved. tightn locknut without moving adjustment ( hopefully ). this is a piece of cake unless you have winches or rippers back there.😈 there is plugs under the tractor for draing excess grease/oil which find their way there. they can be flushed out, but on initial flush, do not relase the clutches as bad things get on the discs. flush as many times as it takes to make them clean and dry. hope this helps me out of room😆

I don't know where your getting your info from but all the 17A's have steering clutch boosters.......referred to as "Steering Clutch Hydraulic Control Mechanism"

Better check yours, it's probably needing some attention.

I AM GETTING MY INFORMATION FROM THE CAT SERVICE, PARTS AND OPERATING MANUELS FOR MY 17A. I WILL NOT SAY THAT I AM RIGHT OR WRONG, BUT I DO NOT SEE ANY BOOSTER ON MINE. I THINK GOD USED IT WHEN HE BUILT THE EARTH , BUT I AM MORE THAN WILLING TO ADMIT I AM WRONG IF I AM. I DO NOT HAVE ALL THE EXPERIENCE OTHERS HAVE HERE, BUT SINCE CAT PRINTED MY MANUELS AND THEY ARE FOR MY MACHINE SERIAL NUMBER, I DEFER TO THE YELLOW GODS..................:deadhorse::noidea::noidea:

THE REAR SHOT MAY TELL THE TALE. IF I IS WRONG I WILL FREELY ADMIT IT. AFTER ALL, WHAT GENTLEMAN WHOM IS MARRIED, HAS NOT BEEN PROVEN WRONG ON A SOMETIMES DAILY BASIS😆

Hi Team,
seems strange that you say your 17A has no Steering Clutch Lever Booster as even the 3T (predecessor of the 17A) had the same booster as did the D6 and D8 of the day.
Scan below from my 17A Service Manual may help.
I cannot visualise how one would steer one of these without as they are part of the linkage system.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

PS
in the pic you have just posted the booster oil filler plug is the plug in the middle of the cover panel just below the fuel tank in the rear end photo.
The small light coloured plug on top of the booster in this post is a filter screen that may need cleaning.

navistar,

If you look at the back of your dozer underneath the cat decals/bottom of the tank there is a cover plate, centered between the two grease nipples you will see that large hex plug, that is the clutch bath that 'you dont have'

l dont think there was any demand for photos as you may get more milage out of folks if you dont shout at them!! Its still rude even when you are admiting your mistakes,LIKE A GENTLEMAN, but with a bit of luck the bath you dont have may still have some oil in it!

Good luck.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
