Is there any problem with putting a muffler on a 17A? Mine is currently just a straight exhaust and we have nesting Golden Eagles on the property. There is some concern from the county that running the loud dozer will mess with their breeding season. I am one to go along to get along so if I can put a muffler on it I am sure it would help.

If it can be done does anyone have a suggestion on an affordable muffler?

Edit: Non-turbo if that matters.

I would consider buying a Gill or Walker spark arrestor. They are somewhere just north of $100.00. I will quiet it some and still allow the exhaust to flow freely. Some mufflers can create a lot of back pressure.
D-4 7U-43159 with 4S dozer and Cat 40 scraper, D-7 3T-1179 with Cat 7S hydraulic dozer, D-7 17A 13,944, D-8 14A-1160 with Cat 8S cable dozer, Cat 12-99E-4433 Grader. All runners and users.

Back pressure can improve performance too. I fitted a muffler to my old International tractor and it transformed its performance, effectively moving the power band up a gear!

Close enough. We actually didn't buy in Boulder County on purpose but when you have a 25 year old golden eagle nest on the property I guess it is worth taking that into account. For the most part the eagles don't care what we do at all but in the interest of being a good neighbor I'll do what is within reason.

I have tried going down that route of bending over backwards to keep people happy and I have found most times Im just making a rod for my own back and some people are never happy no matter how much I give
Having said that I like things to be as quiet as I can so I would fit a muffler anyway for me and my own purposes not any one elses

Never did care for the taste of golden eagles.

You need some new neighbors.

Hello , as you see , in the army it was normal to equip the D7's with mufflers . I bought one of them and the muffler stayed on the machine , not only for myself but also for my neighbours .

Thanks, that is just the kind of thing I am looking for. It looks like the Walker units mentioned above would work.

Yes, it should be quieter anyway because even with earmuffs it is killing me.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
